Music is around us in all shapes

The love and art behind a song is fascinating

Rhythm and soul, lyrics and meaning

What can music cause? What can it prevent? Composer and leading an entire orchestra takes it patience. It seems so simple, but have you tried?

What can music do for us? It’s something we think adds value or, as my father says about certain genres, it is pure environmental pollution. The bottom line is that we think differently. The interesting thing about this is that all have two ear canals and a brain and how that connection happens is so individual.

Music can reduce stress, improve sleep quality, decrease mood swings, as well as increase mood swings. It is like a magic wand for our soul. Not only our soul, but also our entire body.

In the book “7 Kinds of smart” you can read; “music can serve as a stimulant whenever you need a creative lift in your life”. Furthermore to read; It represents a refreshing shift into a different domain and provides a way of opening up to new perspectives in life (p. 71, Thomas Armstrong).

Music affects me so much. Pop music makes my legs twitch. The energy kicks in at a high level and it takes a lot for me not to start exercising. Loud music and exercise are like the song “Unstoppable” by Sia.

“I put my armor on, show you how strong I am. I put my armor on. I’ll show you that I am. I’m unstoppable.”

A thought that struck me the other day; what if we were to conduct an experiment where we sing instead of talking and when we sing we talk? Would it have the same impact? What do you think?

Just like those who feel their brain clearing when they jog, loud pop music has the same effect on me when I do cardio and weight training. At the moment I’m listening to the song “Overdrive” by Ofenbach. Feeling the strength, the courage, the motivation and the feeling of just pushing past everything that feels hard. That’s the impact music has on me. “I wanna feel the heat, I wanna own the night. I wanna feel the beat, I wanna dance tonightI wanna lose myself, I wanna come alive. I wanna feel the love, go into overdrive

Understanding and creating music is one way to be smart.

These talented musicians look at music with their intelligence and ability to understand music on a different level than most of us.

We like music but do not learn to interpret it in depth. Eidetic memory for music fascinates me. How is it possible that by hearing a song, one can play the whole thing immediately after? How impressive is this? Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was such a prodigy. When he lived in the 19th century, people were not surrounded by music around the clock. People created without the influence of other styles. It was the inner feeling that came to life. He was musically intelligent.

Let us put it this way, said by Frédéric Chopin; “Bach is an astronomer, discovering the most marvelous stars. Beethoven challenges the universe. I only try to express the soul and the heart of man.”

Psychological thrillers. Give them a brief thought and that music we find scary. We curl up on the sofa and get the feeling that someone is breathing down our necks and we turn around. How has that part been created? Is it something innate that has to do with the music or is it something we learned from watching movies? It’s not possible because young children have never seen horror movies. So it’s in our genes and the instinct for self-preservation and survival.

Why do we see certain stereotypical images in our heads depending on the music we hear?

Hard rockers have long hair and worn-out clothes. Classical music is associated with fine and stylish clothes. What kind of feeling and understanding of the music would we have if it was the other way around? After all, it’s not about the comfort of the clothing choice. Musical styles are associated with lifestyles. The 1920s Charleston appeals to me. The lifestyle, the dancing, the clothes, the hairstyles. When I turn 50 in three years, I will have a party and that will be my theme. I’m already planning the festivities. It’s a bit early, but that’s the impact music has on me.

The following quote sums it up;  “Music is life itself.” – Louis Armstrong

Conclusion: Music is poetry with feeling.
Love music and learn to understand the effect it has on you.

Why think about this topic

A wise man by the name of Ludwig van Beethoven said the following and it sums up my reflections;

“Music can change the world.”

Three main take-aways from reflecting on this topic:

  1. Allow yourself to feel the music

2. See songs as true coming from the heart

3. Closing my eyes and focusing on the song gives a new feeling

Questions and reflections:

1. When was the last time you listened to a genre that is not part of your usual music?

2. How could your body and mind benefit from music?

3. Is your self-confidence related to what kind of music you listen to?

Music is the soundtrack of your life.” — Dick Clark
